Indoor Soccer Goal Keeping Rules

When you are a goal keeper for an indoor soccer team you have a lot of responsibility. A few vital saves can help your team win in a pressure situation and when you are under pressure you don't want to mess up. Listed below are some indoor soccer goal keeping tips and rules that will improve your playing ability and your skill when you need to shine in pressure situations. Being a goal keeper for an indoor soccer team is not as easy as it looks and you need to know more rules as an indoor keeper than you do if you are an outdoor football goal keeper. Here are the things you need to know to play goal keeper for an indoor soccer team...

  1. Don't bounce the ball when it is in your possession.
  2. Don't drop the ball and pick it up again.
  3. Don't pick up or catch the ball after one of your players has passed it to you using his or her feet.
  4. Don't throw the ball over the half way line without letting it bounce.

There are some other things as a goal keeper you need to know. When you want to kick the ball when you are holding it, don't let it hit the net above, the referee will give you a warning or award an indirect free kick to the opposing team in your box. It also helps a lot if you wear a shirt that is different to your team members. In some indoor soccer leagues in South Africa they will not let you play unless your shirt is a different colour. Here are some goal keeping tips for indoor soccer...

  1. Use the wall or net on the side of the arena when your team members are being heavily marked. This will give them the chance to hopefully get rid of their markers and get the ball into their possession.
  2. Don't let yourself get rushed as a goal keeper. There is a time limit for holding the ball but if you get rid of it as soon as you get it there is a good chance you will give the ball to someone on the other team, believe me I have seen it happen all to often.
  3. When you have got space, use it! Put the ball down and take it out of your box a bit and find the person you want to pass it to.
  4. In most forms of South African indoor soccer you can come out of your box and even score a goal if you want, but make sure when you do this to ask 1 of your defenders to watch your goal line.
